Why You Should Think Twice Before Buying a Glass Door Commercial Refrigeration Unit

Most of the time a glass door commercial refrigeration unit is not a good idea. This is what you need to know about them.

Glass door refrigerators are only needed when product needs to be displayed directly to customers. Unfortunately they are becoming more common in other applications and it is becoming an expensive problem.

There are a lot of older glass door refrigerators for sale. Often they appear to be a good deal.

There are a lot of former soft drink reach ins around. I would always be cautious about older refrigeration equipment. A good deal can easily end up costing more than new equipment if it keeps breaking down. These are units that the soft drink companies did not think were worth keeping. Others are retirees from convenience stores.

The glass doors and the lights use a tremendous amount of energy. Heat is gained from both the doors and the lights. The refrigeration system then has to remove this heat. This results in higher utility bills. This is a hidden cost of glass door units.

Because of the greater heat loads, larger compressors are needed. Often more expensive semi-hermetic compressors are used. Unfortunately these have a shorter life expectancy.

Taking all of this into consideration, I would not recommend buying an older glass door unit. In fact, I would stay away from new ones unless you really need one. One reason to use one is the need for product display.
If you do need a glass door unit, I would consider a new one. You can save a lot of money not buying a glass door refrigerator unless you really need one.
